J-pura conquers the aquatic playgrounds..

  Swimming is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by many people all over the world with no age or gender discrimination. Evolved with the evolution of the human beings, the activity of swimming has now reached a state where it is considered one of the most popular sport activities in the Olympic Games. Swimming can be defined as an individual or team sport activity that involves the cooperate movement of legs and arms to move the body through water.The activity of swimming burns a lot of calories while supporting the building of muscles and maintaining weight and body strength.

  Inter University Games 2017 held with the enthusiastic participation of all the state universities in the country remarked the end of the swimming tournament on 16 July. The series of swimming events were held in the University of Jayawardenapura on 15 and 16 of July. The swimming events were held under the styles of butterfly stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, individual medley and relay events.

   The overall championship of the tournament was won by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura with 169 points. The University of Colombo was the first runner up with 148 points. The third place was won by the University of Kelaniya with a score of 127 points. The men’s championship was won by the University of Colombo with a score of 99 points; while the women’s championship was won by the University of Sri Jayawardenapurawith the same score (99 points).

 The tournament held under male and female categories included a series of individual and team events. The participants succeeded in making several new match records too. Taveesh Edussuriya of the University of Kelaniya, W.K.S. Wickramarachchi of the University of Ruhuna made two new individual records while the female competitors of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura made a new team record in the 4*100m free relay event.

The finalized results of the men’s category are as follows.

50m backstroke – W.K.S. Wickramarachchi of the University of Ruhuna with a new match record of 30.22.

50m free style – H.M.R.L.B. Herath of the University of Moratuwa

50m breaststroke – H.M.R.L.B. Herath of the University of Moratuwa

50m butterfly -H.M.R.L.B. Herath of the University of Moratuwa

100m backstroke – N.K.D.O. Madushanka of the University of Sabaragamuwa

100m free style – W.K.S. Wickramarachchi the University of Ruhuna with a new match record of 0.58.28

100m breaststroke – Taveesh Edussuriya of the University of Kelaniya

100m butterflystroke – D.A. Mahawatte of the University of Kelaniya

200m free style – W.K.S. Wickramarachchi of the University of Ruhuna

200m backstroke – N.KD.O. Madushanka of the University of Sabaragamuwa

200m breaststroke – Taveesh Edussuriya of the University of Kelaniya with a new match record of 2.51.03

200m butterfly – D.A. Mahawatte of the University of Kelaniya

200m individual medley – Taveesh Edussuriya of the University of Kelaniya with a new match record of 2.36.34

400m free style – Y.S.D.S. Rajaratne of the University of Colombo

4*100m free relay – University of Colombo

The series of exciting events came to an end, by sharing the victory among the participants not only through championships but also through the various experiences they shared among each other.
