SriLanka is a country, well known for the victorious milestones marked in the field of sports. Irrespective of the nativity or foreignness of a sport, SriLankans succeed in them, in a satisfactory way. Hockey is one such foreign sport with a non- Asian origin; however, getting popular among SriLankan community.

It can simply be defined as a game played between two teams trying to direct a ball into the goal using a hockey stick amidst the opponents’ obstruction. There are several kinds of hockey games played worldwide, and field hockey, ice hockey and bandy are a few of the types. Among them field hockey is practiced in Sri Lanka in a more popular scale than other types, with the prevailing environmental and climatic conditions.

 Among the various kinds of hockey tournaments organized in the country, Pera Hockey Sixes is one series of tournaments, popular in the SriLankan sports world. Organized by the Hockey Family of University of Peradeniya, the tournaments are held annually. It is not limited for the university level players, but also make space for other hockey players to showcase their talents in the game. The exciting set of games were held this year too, at the ground premises of the University of Peradeniya on 1 and 2 July.

Participants from Hockey clubs around the country and the hockey teams of universities and various other institutes made the event full of life and energy. The Championship of the male category of inter club tournament was won by the Blue Horses A (SLEME) from the match held between Blue Horses versus Old Kings. The third place was won by Colombo Warriors.

The Women Championship was won by Pera from the match held between Pera and Pushpadana. The third place was won by BMS.

The tournament had events under inter university level and the best player of the women’s category was M.N.M. Wickramanayake of University of Kelaniya. The best player of the men’s category was K.M. Dissanayake of University of Sri Jayawardenapura. The overall championship of the Inter University women’s category was won by the University of Kelaniya. University of Rajarata and University of Sabaragamuwa were the first and second runners up respectively.

The overall championship of the men’s category was won by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura. The second and third places were won by the University of Sabaragamuwa and Rajarata respectively.
